The board of directors has discussed providing an island hunting opportunity for its members in sponsorship with the island's Hidden Valley Conservation Club.
If you aren't aware, the Hidden Valley Conservation Club is a conservation organization that provides both upland and waterfowl hunting opportunities on private land away from the competition of public land hunters.
The proposed event will be an upland hunt with either pheasant and chukar. As a participant of the event you will have two choices.
First choice is whether you want to handle your dog while another person (hunter) shoots birds over your dog. This is the less expensive option that simply is the cost of the birds. $31 a hen pheasant, $36 a cock pheasant, $20 a chukar.
There is no minimum or maximum number of birds you can choose to purchase. The average tends to be between 2-4 birds. With this option insurance is covered by the Hidden Valley Conservation Club and you do not need your hunting license.
The second option available is you can be the hunter. There are several additional considerations if you decide this option suits you best. As a hunter you have to pay a "guest" fee of $50 on top of the cost of birds. This fee is for adding a person to their insurance for the day. As a gunner you also need to be accompanied by a valid Hidden Valley Conservation Club member.
Several of our board members are currently HVCC members as well. Additionally, you must hold a valid hunting license. If you do not hold a valid hunting license you will not be eligible for this option.
The board feels this is a great event for new and established members to have a chance at hunting/handling their dogs in a guided and safe environment, without having to travel to Alberta for your first chance at the revered ringneck pheasant. It will also be some of the best training for your dog as they will conceptualize the entire hunting process. The date of the Hunt is September 28 & 29, 2024.
